September 7 INFUSION/Berkeley Startup Cluster Lunch

How does the Internet affect our approach to intimacy? That's a subject of the latest book by prolific author and speaker Sherry Turkle, a psychiatrist, sociologist, and professor of science and technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The book is titled Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other (www.alonetogetherbook.com). Turkle maintains we "confuse the scattershot postings on a Facebook wall with authentic communication." Some might have said the same thing about the writing on the back of a postcard, when postcards were first created. But if you'd like to find out her reasoning about the shallowness to which the Internet has driven us, and if you'd even like to verbally joust with her in real time, here are the physical coordinates:

Berkeleyside Business ForumBSC/Berkeleyside Business Forum

In January 2011, the BSC established a collaboration with BerkeleySide.com to co-host a series of local business forums.

The first of these forums will be held on Monday, January 24 at 7 PM at Freight & Salvage on Addison.

The Forum is an opportunity to discuss the business climate in Berkeley, share experiences and learn from peers. The evening will be conversational and interactive -- it's not an occasion for speeches or soporific PowerPoint presentation.

Among the confirmed panelists are Chris Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of Wired and author of The Long Tail, Carl Bass, CEO of Autodesk, Michael Caplan, director of the city's Office of Economic Development, Kat Taylor, founding director of OneCalifornia Bank and Foundation, Amy Thomas, president of Pegasus Books, and Amanda West, founder of Amanda's restaurant.

This first forum is a free event, but you need to reserve a place by emailing forum@berkeleyside.com. Doors for the forum will open at 6:30 p.m.

If you want to organize, host or suggest an event, venue or speaker, then please contact the BSC.

Event Description

What if Gandhi’s reincarnation emerged as someone promoting the Web instead of the spinning wheel? That might be Craigslist.com founder Craig Newmark, who last month launched Craigconnects.org, a nonprofit “to get the word out about people of good who get stuff done…and who never had a voice until now.” So far, the site contains lists – lists of organizations doing community building, journalism integrity, transparency in government, service, veterans’ issues, and peace in the Middle East.  Interviewing Craig will be Scott Rosenberg, Internet savant, founder of Salon.com, author of two books (Dreaming in Code and Say Everything), and long-time Berkeley resident.

This event takes place at the Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St., between Spruce and Arch and a few blocks north of the UC campus. Admission is $10 at the door and $5 for students.

These events (INFUSION and the Berkeley Cybersalon) are hosted in partnership with The Berkeley Startup Cluster, which was recently formed to encourage high-tech startups and companies to locate in Berkeley.

Hackers & Founders Meetup at Hub Berkeley in collaboration with the BSC

Don't miss the triumphant return of Hackers & Founders to the East Bay on March 23! Please join us at The Hub for conversation, snacks and general geekery.

The meetup starts at 6:30 pm. Feel free to drop in any time until about 10:00 pm.

How do I find the meetup? We will be at the Hub Berkeley which is in Suite 400 of the David Brower Center (on the western border of the campus in downtown Berkeley). To gain access to the building, Dial 194 and we'll buzz you in. By the way, The Hub is about a block from BART. You're welcome.

Topics of conversation: Hackery in general, startups, shiny new technologies we're playing with, recent articles on Hacker News.

It's all really laid back and casual. Many of us are either interested in founding a startup, are in the process of founding a startup or are serial entrepreneurs.

For more information, go to the Hackers & Founders website.

Vivek WadhwaBSC/INFUSION Lunch with Vivek Wadhwa

We have partnered with INFUSION Lunch produced by Sylvia Paull to organize periodic thought provoking lunches for the East Bay tech community.

Our first event is scheduled for Thursday, March 3, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 at the Freight and Salvage, 2020 Addison Street, in downtown Berkeley. The speaker is Vivek Wadhwa, a prominent blogger (BusinessWeek, Techcrunch), with academic appointments at numerous universities (UC Berkeley’s School of Information; Duke, Harvard Law, Emery). He will be in conversation with UC Berkeley's Michael Cohen, director of Innovation Ecosystem Development, on a topic dear to our hearts: “How To Make Berkeley a High-Tech Mecca.”

All of the INFUSION - Berkeley Startup Cluster lunches will be held at the Freight and Salvage.

Lunch is $15 and will be catered by the Bread Workshop, providing organic, sustainable, and delicious fare. Lunch is from noon to 12:30 in the lobby, and then we’ll move into the auditorium to listen to our speaker(s).

Incidentally, you should know that Sylvia likes to call on people to participate. It makes the event more interactive and informative than your average panel discussion...

If you want to join us for lunch, please RSVP to whoisylvia@aol.com by 5:00, Tuesday, March 2.

If you want to join us just for convsersation, please arrive at 12:30 and go directly to the auditorium!  There will be no charge for those who arrive after 12:30 p.m.
