What kind of research can you be expected to conduct for your psychology thesis?
As you begin thinking about the thesis you will write for your advanced psychology degree, you might have a few questions. One of the most common questions is about the type of research you will need to do in order to fulfill the thesis instructions. The answer to this question will be determined by the time you have and the degree you are completing. Whatever type of research you conduct, be sure to keep track of your sources. Regardless of the specifics, these are a few different types of research you will most likely conduct while completing your psychology thesis:
- Reading: All students who work on any type of thesis have to do a significant amount of reading. You will need to research studies that are similar to the one you plan to conduct so you can see the steps and outcomes. You will also have to research topics and subtopics, too. You can plan to spend several hours each day looking for articles in academic and scientific journals so you can be well-versed in your topic of study.
- Experiments: If you have enough time, you will need to conduct actual experiments. In most cases, you will not complete any longitudinal studies. Most of the experiments will be conducted in labs or in interview settings. Of course any research-based experiments that you conduct will need to follow the rules with experimental groups and control groups.
- Interviews: Some of the most accurate research you can conduct is from first-hand sources. Anything that you have to read is usually from a second-hand source who reported on the study. If you can find a researcher to interview, you will be able to ask questions and get the actuate answers that you need for your thesis. With technology, you do not actually have to be in the same room with your interviewee. You could talk to each other through email, a chat space, o even with video conferencing software.
- Recordings: Now that it is easier than before to make recordings of video or audio, you will most likely be able to use this type of recorded research for your thesis. You might be able to use a documentary or a recorded interview. These can be powerful sources to learn from when you start to conduct research. Radio news programs often have useful information, too.
